Let's Dance: The Eighties greatest mix-master reveals techniques in new memoir

Jeremy Kennedy, Atlanta Alternative Music Examiner

Jeremy: How has mixing changed over the last 25 years or so? Is it an easier process today or more difficult in your opinion? Phil: Technology has changed the mixing process tremendously, allowing us to mix entirely ‘in the box’ on computer systems with no real need for hardware like mixing consoles and outboard effects whatsoever. Having said that, I personally prefer to use a combination of both for my current mixing, software and hardware.

Jeremy: What was it about your production abilities that made your work so attractive to artists in the Eighties? Phil: I think the combination of creative and musical sensibilities towards artists songs and direction, this was largely due to my production partner Ian Curnow, who is a fantastic musician and programmer. Also the fact that PWL Studios was always one of the best and most up-to-date equipped studios London during the 1980’s. As soon as new technology came onto the market, we would be amongst the first to try it then purchase it, if we liked it…

Steps win chart battle with Ultimate Collection

After a break of ten years, '90s pop heroes Steps skip straight to the summit of the Official Albums Chart to claim their third Number 1 with 'The Ultimate Collection'.

They over take Arkansas rockers Evanescence who were race leaders in Wednesday’s Official Charts Update.

The feat sets a triumphant seal on Steps’ reunion which sees them star in their own TV documentary series currently airing on Sky Living while they prepare for a reunion tour in 2012.

Donna Summer - This Time I Know It's For Real - LIVE - 89 Italy PWL

I remember when in 1989 Donna Summer came to Italy in this tv show called "Il principe azzurro", I liked very much all songs Stock, Aitken & Waterman wrote for her. It was a shame there wasn't a second PWL album for her.

This Day in Music, Aug 29th: Never Gonna Give You Up

On this day in 1966, The Beatles played their last concert before a paying audience, at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, California to a sold-out crowd of 25,000. John and Paul, knowing what the fans do not (that this will be the last concert ever) bring cameras on stage and take pictures between songs. During this tour, The Beatles have not played a single song from their latest album, ‘Revolver’. They finished the show with a version of Little Richards "Long Tall Sally". [read the full article]

POP! - Serious

from Wikipedia:

Pop! were a UK pop group consisting of Glenn Ball, Hannah Lewis, Jamie Tinkler, and Jade McGuire. The group was formed in the summer of 2003 when they were signed by Pete Waterman.[1] They released three singles on the Sony/BMG record label, but disbanded in early 2005, due to poor record sales.

The group had three hit singles, which all reached the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart during 2004 and 2005, but each performed under expectations. Their debut single "Heaven and Earth" was withdrawn from the chart because the single contained a track whose length was longer than permitted for that format.[2] Following singles were "Can't Say Goodbye" and "Serious".[3] A fourth single, "Xanadu" (a cover of the Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra song), was due to be released but was cancelled when the group split. They had also recorded songs for a planned album. Their single "Heaven and Earth" was licenced for use in Dancing Stage Fusion by Konami in 2005.

Rick Astley looks back on his career and explains why family is his priority

“You know what? I don’t want to do this any more,” Rick Astley told his manager. It was 1993 and the chart-topper had already won a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the first male solo artist to have his first eight singles in the UK Top Ten Charts.

A record that remains unbroken today. He was just 27.

...

In 1987 Rick’s album Whenever You Need Somebody sold more than 15m copies and he covered Nat King Cole’s When I Fall In Love. In 1989 second album, Hold Me In Your Arms went gold in America.

He had more hits singles such as She Wants To Dance With Me, Hold Me In Your Arms and Take Me To Your Heart, but he was unhappy about repeating the same kind of song and wanted to move on.

“Leaving Stock, Aitken, Waterman was the happiest day in my career. I’m not knocking them I just wanted to sing more of my own songs rather than all of theirs.”

RCA bought out his contract from PWL, but Rick had already decided to retire from the music industry. [read the full article]

STEPS are set to reunite, and this time it's real.

From GenSteps web site:

"Yesterday we exclusively revealed the news and today ITV Studios have confirmed they are making a four part documentary for Sky Living, documenting the lead up to the release of STEPS' "Ultimate Collection" album.... Says Michael Kelpie of ITV Studios, "Steps came, they entertained and then went their separate ways. Their split was acrimonious, messy and played out on the front pages of the national newspapers." "This documentary series reveals the truths behind the polished pop façade that led to the break-up of one of the most successful pop acts in the UK." "Steps will face their demons as they try to rebuild both personal and working relationships. It will undoubtedly be explosive viewing." [read the full article on GenSteps web site]

Peter Wilson making a comeback

I don't know if this news is true or false, please let me know, here it is:

Melbourne’s Peter Wilson is embarking on a comeback after recording a new song with Stock Aitken Waterman associates Dave Ford and Ian Curnow.

However, the opportunity to work with a pair of his musical heroes was enough to lure him back into the studio.

Stereo was co-written and produced by PWL engineers Dave Ford and Ian Curnow, who were heavily involved with the production house that brought you Kylie, Bananarama and Rick Astley.

Speaking of Rick, Stereo wouldn’t sound out of place on one of his albums – particularly the retrotastic Matt Pop remix.

Pop mastermind from the 80s now has family fun in his sights

HE GAVE us Rick Astley's quiff, transformed Kylie Minogue from Erinsborough mechanic to global megastar and – somewhat less laudibly – took Sonia to number one.

Three decades on, Mike Stock (as in Stock Aitken Waterman) is once again a man on a mission.

The most successful songwriter-producer in British chart history, turned off by the modern flesh-laden music industry, is pioneering the notion of "U-certificate pop".

Mike Stock has brought his pop show Go! Go! Go! to Alton Towers. The impressario helped launch the careers of Kylie Minogue, left, and Rick Astley, inset left.

Kylie Minogue - Put Your Hands Up Lyrics Video

Earlier today Kylie uploaded a new ’80s remix of Put Your Hands Up to her YouTube page.

The extremely camp re-work is the handiwork of Stock Aitken Waterman’s “mix master” Pete Hammond, making this the closest she has ever come to a reunion with the famed Hit Factory.

While the song hasn’t been confirmed as a single, the pop icon left a message on YouTube naming it one of the highlights from her Aphrodite World Tour.

“Those of you who have been to a show will know that ‘Put Your Hands Up’ goes OFF!” she said.

“So as a tour thank you I wanted to share this 80′s-tastic remix by the legendary Pete Hammond. Enjoy!!”

Give the retro flashback a listen below. [read the full article and here and here]

LOVE ME DAY AND NIGHT

(instrumental intro, 48 seconds)

I have a dream of us together
I could give you the best
but someone told me
that you are not satisfied

If you ever think about me
I would like to hold you forever and ever

CHORUS
Tell me about my life, think me in your time
I can't see that you can
Time your time and mine, love me day and night
and I go around, oh, to my life (my life)
END CHORUS

Now you took
your heart away
You've confused me
I wanted to achieve your dreams
Not sad memories

You've told me the same old story
And you haven't given me answers forever and ever

CHORUS

We were good together
how many beautiful adventures
in the old nights and days
My only wish
would have to be with you
forever and ever
CHORUS
